Basic Calling Information
Area Codes and Local Numbers
- Local numbers in France contain nine digits.
- Area codes are incorporated into the local number as the first digit, representing a geographic region.
- Area codes:
1 - Paris and surrounding areas
2 - Northwest
3 - Northeast
4 - Southeast and Corsica
5 - Southwest
- Area codes:
- When calling within France, dial the DAC ("0") before the local number. Do not dial this access code when calling from another country.
- France Telecom's "0" is the default DAC. Other numbers are used as the DAC when an alternative carrier is used:
Cegetel - 7
Telecom - 9
Tele2 - 4
Mobile Phones
- Mobile phone numbers in France contain nine digits. The first digit is always "6" or "7."
- When calling a mobile phone from within France, always dial the DAC ("0") before the nine-digit number. Do not dial this access code when calling from another country.
Special Numbers and Services
- Toll-free numbers start with the prefix "0-800."
- Outside access from within a business or self-contained (PBX) phone system is usually "0" or "9."
- Subscribers can sign up for call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, and service for the deaf (TTY); some carriers also provide translation services.
Tones
- Ring tone: Long equal on and off tones
- Busy tone: Equal length on and off tones

Note: France, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Reunion share the same 10-digit dialing plan. When calling between or within any of these countries, dial 0 + nine-digit number. |
